The Mind is a Beautiful Beast 2009 A Local Pilot Event for a National Fine Art Exhibition Sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) May 11 – May 31, 2009 ... ENTRY DEADLINE: MARCH 6 Must receive emailed images by 5:00 PM, EST. Late Entries will not be Accepted The project “The Mind is a Beautiful Beast” comes from a position of empowering artists interested in creating artwork around issues involving mental health. EVENT INFO: This will be the only call for submissions open to the public. Those artists selected for the pilot show will also be considered for the main national show in October. HOW TO ENTER CRITERIA FOR THE SELECTION OR ARTIST: Artists who are exploring these issues in their artwork, or may be involved with someone struggling with mental illness, or who use their own personal history with mental illness to inform their artwork. METHOD OF SELECTION: The show will be selected by digital image with a follow up studio visit by the curator to discuss the meaning of your work in context to the show and to look at finished and in progress pieces. Artists may enter up to 3 works – 2 completed pieces and one that is currently still in progress. Send one view of each 2 dimensional work and up to 3 views may be sent for each 3 dimensional work. For video and performance work please follow the submission process below. ELIGIBILITY: Works in all fine art media (photography, painting, works on paper, mixed media, video, animation, fiber sculpture, metalwork, woodworks, and live performance) completed within the last 2 years are eligible. Art should be original, no mass produced prints or reproductions. Hand pulled prints, original digital prints and photographs are acceptable. Work must be the artist’s own creation, not done under the supervision of an instructor. PRESENTATION: Work may not exceed 7 feet high by 10 feet long or 75lbs. in weight. All two dimensional work must be ready to hang and with any special hanging equipment and instructions. SUBMITTING DIGITAL IMAGES: Be certain that your images follow the stated guidelines before sending. Due to the large number of entries, we cannot resize or correct incorrectly submitted images. • Send JPGs with .jpg extension, no more than 800 pixels in the long dimension at a browser resolution of 72 dpi. • Save at standard Baseline (not Progressive) at a maximum quality of 10 or 12 (or 85%) – if there is a choice. • Filename of each image: your last name, first and middle initials, for example, Jane S. Smith first entry would be SmithJS1.jpg. For multiple views of a single 3 dimensional work add a, b, or c (SmithJS1a.jpg). Use letters and numbers only, with no special characters or spaces. • EMAIL images as individual attachments to a single email. Put The Mind is a Beautiful Beast in the Subject line and put your full name and address and title, medium, and dimensions of each corresponding images in the body of the email. Send to: mindisabeautifulbeast@gmai SUBMITTING VIDEO AND ANIMATION: Be certain that your images follow the stated guidelines before sending. • Video artists are invited to submit approximately 10 minutes of video in DVD format. • List all videos contained on the DVD in a hard case with a caption list and an artist's statement. • Work both with and without a sound component will be considered. • The 10 minutes of footage may be comprised of several shorter videos, but the work must be on one DVD. • EMAIL curator putting The Mind is a Beautiful Beast at: mindisabeautifulbeast@gmai • Materials will not be returned. DELIVERY OF ACCEPTED ART: Accepted work may be hand delivered to Medicine Wheel Gallery, 110 K Street, South Boston, Massachusetts 02127 on Monday, May 4 2 -6 PM . Art will be returned in the same packing material in which it was received. All accepted work must remain at the gallery for the duration of the show.
